Turning First-Time Buyers into Long-Term Oral Care Loyalists
How Perfora used Retainley’s cashback wallet, tiered earn rates and AI-driven nudges to build repeat-purchase behaviour into a category most brands treat as one-off.
The challenge
Perfora is a premium oral care D2C brand — electric toothbrushes, whitening products, refills, hygiene essentials. It’s a category with an unusual retention shape: a portion of the catalog (refills, whitening kits) is genuinely repeat-purchase behaviour, and another portion (the electric toothbrush itself, accessories) is a considered one-time buy that doesn’t recur for months.
The team was doing everything right on the acquisition side. The retention question was more subtle: how do you get someone who bought a premium electric toothbrush to come back for a refill, a whitening kit, a family upgrade — three or six months later, when the ad they clicked has long since scrolled off? A discount code six months after purchase feels like it’s begging. What was needed was something the customer would seek out, not something the brand had to push.
The Retainley approach
Perfora built its retention system around three ideas working together — a visible wallet, tiered rewards that got better with lifetime spend, and an AI nudge layer keeping the balance top-of-mind between purchases.
- Signup and order cashback — every order fed the customer’s Retainley wallet with credit sized to keep first-purchase to second-purchase economics healthy.
- LTV-based tiers — customers who kept coming back moved into higher tiers with better earn rates and larger burn caps, making the second and third orders more rewarding than the first.
- AI-driven reminders — instead of a blanket email schedule, nudges fired based on purchase interval and category: a whitening kit reminder before the previous kit would have run out, a refill prompt at the right cadence, a tier-progress note when a customer was close to unlocking a higher earn rate.
Implementation
Wallet balance applied in one click at checkout. Tier logic and burn limits ran inside Retainley so the growth team never had to hand-configure customer segments or reconcile month-end spend against margin targets. The whole system integrated with Perfora’s Shopify stack so nothing had to move between the storefront, the CRM and a spreadsheet.
The nudges were the piece that unlocked the category. Because oral care has intervals — daily use, refill cycles, kit replacement cadence — Retainley’s AI layer could time the message to when the customer was actually about to need something, rather than when the brand happened to send its next newsletter.
How it works for the customer
A first-time Perfora buyer sees welcome cashback land in their wallet. Their order earns them more. Weeks later, when the refill cycle is coming due, they get a soft nudge: their balance is sitting there and can burn on their next order in one click. As they keep buying, their tier steps up — better earn rate, bigger burn cap. The whole thing feels like being a regular at a shop that remembers you, not being harassed by a promo calendar.
The outcome
Perfora moved from an acquisition-first funnel to a repeat-first one. First-time buyers convert into second and third orders on the wallet loop, and higher-LTV customers concentrate in the top tiers where the economics work best for both sides. The program runs quietly in the background — no coupon fires, no manual campaigns, no month-end reconciliation.
Why it worked
Retainley matched the shape of Perfora’s category. Cashback made every order feed the next, tiers made loyalty economically visible to the customer, and the AI nudge layer solved the specific hard problem in oral care — reaching people at the moment they’re about to need the next thing, not on the brand’s marketing calendar.
